NGLC Breakthrough Models Incubator
July 22–25, 2014
The Breakthrough Models Incubator is accepting applications from leadership teams at forward-thinking institutions ready to develop the next generation of education and business models in higher education. In 2014 we will assemble and serve institutions seeking to advance and implement competency-based education, supported by sustainable, next generation business models. Applications are due March 3, 2014.
Why Competency-Based Education?
Competency-based education (CBE) models reward students for skills acquired rather than time spent in a seat. Combined with new technology to deliver and assess learning, and a focus on outputs at all levels, CBE is a promising strategy to break the “iron triangle” and expand access, affordability, and quality learning and degree attainment for more students. (See the Background and Context section of the Information and Application packet, or click on the Background tab, for more on the promising recent development of CBE.)
Participating Incubator teams, which are named through a competitive application process, join a larger community of innovators that includes the NGLC Wave IIIb grantees and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Breakthrough Delivery Models grantees, all of whom are designing and implementing new, technology-enabled learning and business models in higher education. Support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will permit this million-dollar incubator program to be provided free of charge to participating institutions, and provides a $50,000 stipend to defray travel and planning expenses.
“The Incubator introduced us to colleagues from other institutions who were also seeking new models to improve the success of their students. Their expertise, feedback and suggestions aided us immensely; as did the advice and counsel of the Incubator consultants. The Incubator created for us a national institutional learning community committed to student success, which has been invaluable to us and our project. We encourage our colleagues around the country to consider the Breakthrough Model Incubator as an asset to be utilized when taking on transformative innovation on their campus. “ – Kenneth Ender, President, William Rainey Harper College
If your institution is already working on designing and launching a competency-based education program, or if you believe you are ready to do so, you should strongly consider applying to the 2014 BMI. Your team will create a launch-ready plan within one year of participating and your team will have the experience of:
- Three guided days of uninterrupted quality time to create, design and plan
- Content from leaders in the field and subject matter experts in technology, policy, finance, design thinking, and more
- Community with like-minded innovative institutions
- Coaching support for six months
- New skills in designing and planning gleaned from IDEO
Team participation for this million-dollar initiative, including a $50,000 stipend to cover travel and accommodations for Incubator events and engagement with the domains, is generously funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
